There is a lot of controversy going on about the judging of my class, “Fitness Model” these days, and I can’t say enough how vital it is to the Pros to be able to prepare for the stage as an athlete. This class must continue to be treated with the same foundational assumptions as the other bodybuilding classes if it to be part of bodybuilding competition. What I mean by this statement is that the physique is essentially an athletic one, inspired by the same techniques and principles that define bodybuilding as a sport: a hand-crafted, carefully detailed physique that is based on symmetrical muscular development, and brought to the stage in a properly conditioned manner, showing fullness of the muscle belly with the absence of subcutaneous fat and water, and the athletes showing a full, healthy face and glowing skin, and an overall sense of vibrant health. I have heard that this class is becoming a bikini pageant, and that girls can prepare for a show by following a crystal-light diet and stepping mindlessly on the treadmill. This kind of preparation, and the physique that it inspires, does not belong in the sport of body-building. A fitness model can be an incredible work of art, showing a deep understanding of the principles of shaping one’s physique, as well as correct dieting to show the full work of the athlete. Shows should be won by true Pros who are dedicated to bringing to the stage the finest physique possible, and who work hard for it. It’s a physique that takes your breath away, that inspires others, that goes beyond normal, that is something special that you recognize immediately when you see it. I myself have been inspired by female fitness models who’s physiques show the blood, sweat and tears that they put into their bodies. This is something that can be respected. This is something that can inspire, truly inspire, other women. This is what Fitness Modeling should remain: a specific class within the definition of “Bodybuilding”.
