We have literally NOTHING left in the fridge to eat for breakfast…I am serious, n-o-t-h-i-n-g…! No eggs, no milk, no yogurt, no cottage cheese, no bacon, no ham, not even a crumb of bread. Nada..
When I’m training for a competition, working fasted is second-nature. I have tons of energy, get a ridiculous pump, and have a surplus of energy, but when I’m not dieting, I have absolutely zero tolerance for hunger for any duration longer than 15 minutes, especially in the morning. I was looking forward to a great back and biceps session at the gym, and JJ was going to be setting a new PR for 3 reps on his front squat, so it was down to the wire to come up with something fast.
If you’ve every heard of the chef’s “black box” challenge, you’ll know that this kind of predicament is what a chef thrives on. A scarcity of ingredients and a shortage of time. I made myself a strong coffee, took a quick look over my bare shelves, and then came up with an idea: I had peanut butter, a ton of fresh low fat granola I had just made, Quattro protein powder and some dried dates. I remembered a hallowe’en treat we used to make as kids that involved a lot of food coloring, rice crispies and peanut butter. When I come with a recipe, all I need is a memory of a taste, or an ingredient list and a picture, and my imagination lights up like New Years, (oh wait, it IS New Year’s tonight!)
Anyhoo, these balls of yumminess delivered, and when I calculated the macros, they were just about perfect for an off-season pre-workout scooby snack…JJ gave the final approval, and so here you are:
What you’ll need…
2 Tbsp Organic Smooth Peanut Butter
1 scoop Quattro Vanilla Icecream Protein
2 tsp honey
3 Tbsp low fat granola
pinch of salt
30 grams finely chopped dried medjool dates
Simply blend everything together with a fork, form into 4 balls, and enjoy!!
Macros per ball:
14 g C, 11 g P, 4 g F
