I’ve been working so hard this past year to improve my physique, that yoga has taken second place in my training…Now, moving into 2012, I have my physique where I want it to be, so I am bringing yoga back to an equal footing…That means 25 backbends a day, plus extra work on handstand entry, and the karmasana series…To make improvements on your flexibility, you have to make a commitment of everyday practice, otherwise it’s 1 step forward, 1 step back…and on that note, it’s off to the gym/studio to train my flexibility and also work on my glutes…!

Did you do anything special to get your legs up? Mine are only a couple of feet off the ground.

Hi Clare,
it took me about 8 years to figure out how to move my body into this posture. You can start by opening your legs as wide as your mat, and lift your legs up with the knees locked out. What is key is knowing how to transfer the weight from your hips into you shoulders. There is a point in the pose where you are really using your glutes, almost to the point of cramping, and then you should be using your triceps and pecs. Hint: your shoulder blades need to release in this posture.
Good luck!
